The Open Notebook Announces New Funding Support from Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

Dear TON readers:

We are thrilled to announce two exciting projects that will launch in 2019, made possible by the generosity of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has supported TON‘s early-career fellowship program since 2013. Collectively, our fellows have written about 50 articles for The Open Notebook (read them here), on topics ranging from navigating conflicts of interest, to finding and landing internships, to reporting on risk—and much more. This year, BWF has expanded its support for The Open Notebook, to enable us to create and publish a print anthology of some of the TON articles that have been especially popular and impactful. (Want to lobby for any favorites? Let us know! Just drop an email to editors@theopennotebook.com.)

The Moore Foundation, which fosters path-breaking scientific discovery, environmental conservation, patient care improvements, and preservation of the special character of the Bay Area, has also made a gift that will enable The Open Notebook to build new resources for the science journalism community. The Moore Foundation currently supports TON indirectly, through a grant to The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing that makes the Storygrams annotations series possible. This series, co-published at The Open Notebook and at CASW Showcase, is among our most popular resources. We’re delighted that with the help of a new gift from the Moore Foundation, we can begin developing a platform for people to use our archive of more than 350 articles as part of a more active learning experience.

We are deeply thankful to the Moore Foundation and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund for their generous support.
