Good news, science writers: Editorial budgets may be contracting, but foundations and other organizations continue to dole out money to journalists with important stories to tell. Grants and fellowships have long been important funding sources, providing writers time and money to dig deeper into a story or subject area than they otherwise could. The first-person voice can make a science story more engaging or relatable. However, not every article will benefit from a personal touch, and putting one’s own experiences on the page may be uncomfortable, particularly for writers new to the style. By knowing when and how to insert themselves into their stories, though, science writers can successfully use their life experiences to create pieces that are personally meaningful and have a powerful impact on readers.
Ugandan journalist Fredrick Mugira’s Water Journalists Africa network offers more than 700 members the opportunity to cover underreported stories on the continent, especially in the conflict-prone Nile region. InfoNile, the network’s flagship project, funds journalistic works that would have otherwise been difficult to produce due to economic constraints. InfoNile also mentors and encourages journalists to use data visualization, maps, and other multimedia approaches to contextualize stories related to the river that traverses 11 countries.

Science reporting is lacking in many places, including Nigeria. But journalist Abdullahi Tsanni and his colleagues are determined to change this through new venues, such as the African Science Literacy Network (ASLN), a program that pairs journalists with scientists across Nigeria, who collaborate on science stories published in the media. Still, there are obstacles to overcome, such as funding, visa issues, and support for this nascent field from media outlets.
