Why does it take so long to recover from pneumonia?

I wasn’t so sick that I was hospitalized. I barely had a cough or a fever. But I had breathlessness that was very uncomfortable and often kept me from sleeping. After a week of antibiotics, the bacteria that caused this should be dead. Why does it take two months to get one’s breath back? What is actually happening in the lung?
