Dear TON community,
Over the last decade, thanks to the generous impulses of those who have shared their time and hard-won insights with this community, TON has published more than 450 articles aimed at helping science journalists improve their skills. This year we also published our first book, The Craft of Science Writing, continued to build our TON en Español Spanish translations program, expanded our Pitch Database, and published a collection of articles that provide practical support and guidance for reporters covering COVID-19, including reporters who don’t normally cover health and science.
There’s a lot more that we want to do to support the science journalism community, during this turbulent time and beyond. First, we plan to expand our donor-supported Spanish translations program, which has gotten an intensely positive response from colleagues whose first language is Spanish.
In addition to continuing and expanding upon our core programs, we have a number of new projects in the works, including:
- A series of email mini-courses that will be available for free to anyone
- A peer-mentoring program to connect science journalists with local reporters and editors who don’t specialize in science
- A series of professional-development webinars and virtual trainings for science writers and editors
The Open Notebook is an essential resource for science journalists and aspiring science writers. As we look toward a future full of uncertainty, we can be sure of one thing: High-quality science journalism has never mattered more. We are committed to supporting the science journalism community, and to make this possible, we depend on the financial support of our community. If you find The Open Notebook’s mission to be a valuable one, please consider making a donation or a monthly recurring contribution. All gifts are tax-deductible. Thanks to a pool of 25 matching donors, gifts to The Open Notebook made from now through December 31 will be doubled, up to a total of $7,500. At least half of the funds we raise between now and the end of the year will be earmarked for our Spanish translations program, TON en Español.
Thank you for your generosity!
