SOURCES AND RESOURCES

Human, documentary sources

  • We will also use the Google Earth visualization tool to make our map analysis by comparing the sea rise over a period of time to analyse the shoreline movement
WHAT’S THE SCOPE OF THE STORY?
  • A reporter, alongside a fixer, will be visiting three major communities namely Ganaja village, Kabawa community and a 500-unit housing estate. Other communities that can be explored are Kpata, Adankolo and Gadumo; all located within Kogi state.
SYNOPSIS

Give a narrative description of your story idea, highlighting the salient human interest issues; the actors; your proposed intervention point(s)/story angle, planned follow-up strategies and projected outcome – In maximum 250 words.

In 2022, more than 400,000 people were displaced in Kogi state as a result of flooding. But this is not the first time riverine communities in Kogi state capital have been displaced by flood waters. For many of the residents residing in some riverine communities in Lokoja, flooding during the rainy season has become an annual climate crisis for them.

Lokoja is known as the conference point where the River Niger and Benue meet and for residents, who are artisan farmers or fishermen, adapting to the climate crisis against poor or very low mitigation efforts from the government is their only means of survival. These adoption methods are community-based ideologies that would make these residents survive.

Further findings also showed that the annual flooding might have swallowed some part of the lands owned by these residents causing many to relocate, but others still stay behind to secure their lands.

This investigation intends to examine the climate adoption methods of residents in selected riverine communities (Ganaja village, Kabawa community and a 500-unit housing estate. Other communities that can be explored are Kpata, Adankolo and Gadumo). The report will also use a mapping tool to examine the extent to which flooding has affected these communities

The report will also check through the budget provisions of the states to ascertain the government provisions in mitigating flooding and how effective these budgetary provisions are.

TREATMENT PLAN

(How do you wish to go about executing this project?)
