Sample Annotation for Fact-Checking

Below is a (lightly doctored) sample of story text that has been annotated for fact-checking in a ways that’s consistent with the annotation guidelines provided in The Open Notebook‘s writers’ guidelines for reported features. The passage below includes annotations that correspond to the following different kinds of situations:

  • Direct and paraphrased quotes from interviews (note that timestamps are included for direct quotes; no need to do so for paraphrased material)
  • Facts that are not attributed to anyone in the story but came from multiple interviews
  • Facts that came from some source other than an interview
  • Facts that come from the author’s own experience or expertise, as if they were a source in the story
  • This sample also includes one sentence that isn’t annotated; this is included to show an example of a transition sentence in the writing, where we don’t always expect it to always have an annotation
