A core value that underlies all of our work at The Open Notebook is that our personal experiences, backgrounds, and circumstances influence the way we tell stories, affect who we choose as sources, and guide our decisions about which stories are worth telling in the first place. With this in mind, we’ve made diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) an integral part of our work. We’ve published dozens of articles, interviews, and resource pages on a wide range of DEI-focused topics, from working with a sensitivity reader to making your writing and reporting transgender-inclusive to covering Indigenous communities with respect and sensitivity. You can find these and much more below. We are always adding to our collection, so check back often, or, consider sending your ideas to us.

Articles that Center Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Many of the articles below are part of our longstanding Diverse Voices in Science Journalism series, a collaboration with the National Association of Science Writers’ Diversity Committee. Through this series, supported by the Simons Foundation, we aim to examine the experiences, expertise, and perspectives of science journalists from communities that are underrepresented in science journalism.
